May 10, 2006: S is for Smiles and for Sleep... most of the time

The title is misleading because he does sleep quite a bit, only he spreads it out over 24 hours. First of all, I am NOT complaining, because Ivan really does sleep a lot and well and he falls asleep on his own a LOT compared to Veronika. He falls asleep in the swing, the bouncy chair, sometimes even the bed or the cradle. He does want to be rocked to sleep too, but it's not necessary every single time. I cannot tell you what a relief that is. It's so nice of him to do that, because it gives me time to eat and yell at the dog and discipline Veronika and... shower! I haven't missed a shower yet, that is a miracle in itself. The only problem is that he wakes up twice a night and the second time usually around 5 and then does not go back to sleep right away, only after I've nursed and rocked him etc. etc. which can take up to an hour and it really messes up all the nice sleeping he's done the 8 hours before. He goes back to sleep around 6 and so do I, but really, the damage is done. After rereading these last two sentences I realize I am spoiled rotten and I will shut up now.

Ivan is 7 weeks old today and quite a chunk. I'm not sure how much he weighs, but he is rounding up nice and growing out of the 0-3-months-clothes. He has a cranky period every day, which is around 7 or 8 at night and he can get pretty mad, but it usually doesn't last longer than about half an hour or less. Did I mention he was easygoing? This past week he started smiling and it's a real milestone, more for me than for him almost. There's just nothing like seeing the first expressions of your baby's personality. I can't wait for him to grow and see more. Veronika still adores him and she is becoming an expert in administering the pacifier, covering him up with a blanket and violently shaking colorful toys in front of his face. We have to keep an eye on her because she can get very forceful with her love and there have been many tears already on both parts due to wellmeaning affection gone awry.

The poor guy has also already had to overcome baby acne and balding, but things are improving and new hair is coming. His eyes are still the newborn steel blue color and we can't figure out who he looks like yet. Like I said, can't wait for him to grow...
